    Hi Vargis,

First of all, thank you very much for your detailed write-ups on various aspects of planning the Spiti trip. That's my bible for the trip!

    My wife and I are planning a 9-Day trip from 29 June: Delhi-Shimla(Breakfast Halt)-Recong Peo(2N)-Nako(1N)-Kaza(2N)-Chandra Taal(1N)-Manali(1N)-Shimla-Delhi. I hope the itinerary looks okay.

    I have two questions -

    1. Can we hire an SUV from Shima for 7-8 days? Could you assist me with the rental options.
    2. For Recong Peo, I think we might require a Permit. Could you please assist me in understanding how we can get it.

    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Sumit

Hi Sumit - I do not have any contacts about renting an SUV in Shimla but talk to Jamaica in Kaza at 9418200183 and I am sure he can direct you to someone. He runs a hotel in Kaza and a campsite at Chandratal so you may even stay with him.

There is no permit required for Spiti for Indian nationals so you are OK brother.

    Hi Vargis,

We are taking our parents Duster from Dehradun. So it will be a longer route now: Delhi-Dehradun- Shimla- Kaza-Manali-Dehradun-Delhi, but much cheaper, so I am happy

What I am worried about is the recent rains and the forecast in Himachal, which might get on our way to Kaza. Do you think I should be concerned and should find a workaround?

    Thanks again!

There is no way around it really Sumit. The monsoon will be here and July and August are the months when it rains cats and dogs in Himachal. Just stick to your plans, drive carefully and you will be OK. Duster is a good vehicle for the trip. My friend completed the circuit in his Duster last year and faced no issues. Speak to Jamaica though. It is good to be in touch with someone up ahead. Stay with him at Kaza and then at Chandratal and he can keep you appraised about the roads and weather ahead. Quite a jolly fellow and good company. You will enjoy your stay with him.
