A trip to Ladakh had been planned this month end. Itinerary that we ( 2 persons )followed for the trip was as mentioned below.

Day 1 – July 25th - Arrive at leh, check in to a hotel. Local sightseeing in leh city arranged permits and getting acclimatized

Day 2 –July 26th - Rede from leh to Nubra valley via khadung la, diskit monastery, Hunder stay at Nubra

Day 3 –July 27th Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso and back

Day 4- July 28th - Pangong to leh via chang la pass

Day 4 –July 29th - Rest /relax with shopping within leh city

Day 5- July 30th Flight from Leh Airport back to delhi.

Is the plan too rushed? Any changes that should be made?
we are planning to rent a THAR jeep without driver ( is it possible? , if yes how much the rate? ) or rent a bike.

Your itinerary is definitely doable but a self drive taxi is not really available in Ladakh. You will have to rent the cab with driver after you land there.

    Hi Vargis,
I have read many of your post and found very useful and impressive. required help of yours on following:
I am planning for a trip to leh with my wife. Planning to see drang drung glacier, pangong lake and nubra valley.
My travel dates are: 29th Sep arriving at leh and 6th oct departure morning.
Kindly advice itinerary in which i can cover all three destinations/points and is it good time and place to visit drang drung glacier. Can we feel snow over there or like other spots we can see snow from far only.
And If drang drung glacier is not a good option for sightseeing can you suggest some other good itinerary than usual/general itineraries which is shared by other travel operators.

Hi Varun - How are you planning to travel locally in Leh? Rented bikes, taxi, public transport?

I would recommend that you give up the idea of Zanskar and cover only Ladakh. You only got 7 days and if you go to Zanskar, then 4 days will be spend there. If you still wish to cover it alll and are hiring a private taxi, then you can travel like this.

29th - Arrive at Leh. Rest, arrange taxi and permits
    30th - Leh to Kargil
    1st - Kargil to Padum
    2nd - Padum to Kargil
    3rd - Kargil to Leh
4th - Leh to Nubra Valley to Leh
5th - Leh to Pangong to Leh
    6th - Fly Out

    Or this

29th - Arrive at Leh. Rest, arrange taxi and permits
    30th - Leh to Kargil
1st - Kargil to Pensi La to Kargil (See Drang Drung Glacier from Pensi La and go back to Kargil. Long journey so start by first light of the day)
    2nd - Kargil to Leh
3rd - Leh to Nubra Valley
4th - Nubra to Pangong via Shyok
    5th - Pangong to Leh
    6th - Fly Out

    Hi Vargis,
First of all thanks a lot for such a great detailed and informative blog.
We as a group of 3 couple will be traveling Leh from 28th July 2018 to 6th August 2018.
We will land in Srinagar around 10:30 am on 28th July and will be boarding a flight back to delhi from Leh on 6th August morning.
Out of six of us, I am the only one who had been to Leh Ladakh around 5 years back(from the same srinagar -Leh Highway via Cab and then 4 days bike in Leh at that time).
our tentative itinerary is as follows:-
28th July : By a hired Cab, will start from Srinagar and will reach to Drass or Kargil and will stay there.
29th July : Will visit the War Memorial and then move to Melbuk Monastry, LamayuruMonastry , Alchi, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Patthar Saheb, to Leh. Stay in LEH.
30th July : Stay and relax day in Leh. May be we can visit Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and Local Lel, if health permits.
Also we will look for the good bikes on rent as we want to move ahead on rented bikes. 3 bikes for 3 couples.
31st July : We will start early for turtuk via Khardungla. and will stay in Turtuk.
1st August : Turtuk to hunder, Diksit, Sumur Panamik and again stay in Diksit.
2nd August : From Diksit to Pangong via Agam Shyok. Stay at Pangong Tso
3rd August : Pangong to Leh. via Chang-La, Hemis Monastry, Thikse Monastry, Shey Palace. Stay in Leh. We will return the bikes on this day.
4th August : Book a Innova or Xylo with driver and will move to Tsomoriri and stay at Tsomoriri
5th August : Tsomoriri to Leh.
6th August : Board a flight from Leh to Delhi.

This is in general a tentative itinerary. But we want to have an immersive experience of Ladakh where if possible we can stay in homestays and also can interact with ladakhi people and come to know more about their culture and ideologies.
Also Please let us know if we can change our route from srinagar to Leh via Batalik.

We need your opinions regarding what could be the best itinerary we can have. Should we include Zanskar valley and river rafting(we would love to do it if possible while comin gfrom srinagar to leh) and drop Tsomoriri or Pangong.
What could be the some blissful places which people generally miss because of touching the most touristy places or because of lack of time. We just want to EXPERIENCE and FEEL Ladakh in best possible way. Please suggest the best tweaks we can do in our itinerary.

Also some questions related to safety purpose.

    1. as we are 3 couples should we take the backup vehicle while we are on our bikes. or should we split like 2 bikes or 1 bike and one innova. Or if possible can we get 1 or 2 more couple to join us from some source on internet, so that we can easily take 3 bikes and innova and that will cost us less also and will give us needed safety in case of emergency.

    2. Should we stay in Khalsar on 1st August or Diksit. Not sure of stay options in Khalsar.

    3. Should we come back to Leh from Nubra valley itself and do the Pangong and Tsomoriri both with teh 4 wheeler?.

    Thanks a lot in Advance.
