    Hi Vargis,

Excellent forum! Travelled Srinigar - Leh - Manali by local bus 20 years ago but will finally return this year to hopefully ride this route as a loop from Delhi on a motorbike. I read some conflicting information about restrictions to rented motorcycle use in Ladakh, is this the case? Where can I find information on the permits I would need for this trip. Many thanks, Dave.

    Hi Dave,

That is correct. Any motorcycle rented outside Ladakh can only be used to arrive in Leh city but not for sightseeing in Ladakh. For that you will have to rent another bike in Leh. About permits, I am assuming you are a foreign national and not an Indian citizen, correct?

Yes, from Australia. We have a month to ride but this loop is definitely our priority. The bus trip from Leh to Manali was actually in 1992 but of all my travels that remains such a vivid memory of workers with hammers breaking rocks to repair the road, the stark contrast of the river valley and the mountains and armed guards with machine guns on the bus, the "unbelieveable is it not" sign at the top of the pass and the driver who drove that narrow and terrifying dirt road for 16 hrs straight! I have been back to India since but never made it that far north since then. I can't wait.

You will find that things have changed a lot since then and it is not the same Ladakh anymore that you remembered. About permits, you will have to get a PAP. Please see the article below.

If you get a motorcycle from Manali and go to Ladakh, then you wll also need a permit for Rohtang that I have explained at http://vargiskhan.com/log/rohtang-pass-permits-details-charges-apply/

Thank you for the links and the great info. Nothing stays the same but India is always full of surprises and adventure.

I couldn't agree more on that with you Dave.
