    Hi Vargis,

First of all we'd like to thank you for the wealth of information you've posted on your website. It is incredibly useful and we are very impressed by the details you have included to help fellow travel enthusiasts along their journeys.

We are a couple hoping to travel by motorcycle to the Spiti valley in the coming weeks. We are planning to start from Shimla on Oct 2 or 3. We would like to head towards Kaza via Sarahan, Kalpa, Nako, and Tabo.

Unfortunately, we have seen the bad weather that has afflicted areas like Manali, Chandratal, and the Rohtang pass. So we were thinking we could go as far as possible on the Spiti valley loop and then turn around back to Shimla, rather than head on to Manali.

Our question is, do you think it is still possible to do the first few legs of the trip (Shimla-Sarahan-Kalpa-Nako) and then turn around before reaching Chandratal/Rohtang pass area? Or, is it also unsafe to do the first few legs of the trip? In the end, we know it will depend on the weather, but we were unsure if the first few towns on the route were also affected by the bad weather, or if this was only confined to the northern part/Rohtang pass area.

Thank you so much for your help and we look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Greg - Shimla to Kaza route is open right now but badly beaten by recent spell of rains. Manali to Kaza is closed and there is no ETA on by when it will be cleared. From Shimla, you can travel all the way to Kaza as of now. Make two itineraries. If the road to Manali is open when you are in Kaza, then complete the circuit and exit via Manali. Otherwise, return back to Shimla.
