    Hello Vargis,
Thank you so much for all your detailled information on your blog. Very handy for planning our trip to Spiti/ Ladakh this summer. We're travelling with four of us which makes it possible to hire a private cab now and then. We plan to go by private cab from Shimla via Kinnaur, Spiti to the Leh/ Manali road and on to Leh via Tso Moriri and Tso Pangong. We avoid the Rohtang pass (we were there before).
    My questions are:
    - I assume, we can hire a private car in Shimla and drive all the way to Leh via the Kinnaur/ Spiti road?
-Do you know what the cost will be for hiring a private cab for about 14 days?
-We want to go straight from the Spiti road to Keylong without goiing to Manali. Is this possible? Or do we also need for this stretch a travel permit? We don't actually drive over the Rohtang pass itself but we come on top of it.
-I understand that we are allowed to drive to leh with a 'not local' cab. Are we also allowed to drive via both lakes (Tso Moriri and Tso pangong) on the way to Leh? After all, we are still on our way to Leh?
    Thank you
    Marian

    Hello Marian,

    1. Yes you can rent a private cab and drive it to Leh via Spiti. But it is better to rent it from Chandigarh if you are planning to drive it yourself.

    2. Are you talking about a cab with driver or a self drive rental?

    3. Yes it is possible. You can drive straight to Keylong from Kaza without having the need to cross over Rohtang.

    4. No you cannot drive a "non local" cab to Pangong and Moriri. For that you will need to rent another cab from Leh.

    Hello Vargis,

    Thank you for your answer.
We want to hire a cab with driver all the way up to Leh.
Or maybe up to Kaza in Spiti valley.
We plan to make a trekking either from Debring on the Leh-Manali road to Padum.
Or from Chandratal (Spiti) to Sarchu on the Leh-Manali road and over the Pirtse La to Padum.
We still have to decide on that item.
After the trek, we want to explore Nubra and Tso Pagong as we couldn't go there in the eighties and nineties, the last time we were in Ladakh.
All four of us are retired so we aren't in a hurry! We have planned 6 to 8 weeks for our trip through Kinnaur, Spiti, Ladakh and Zanskar.
    And end up in Srinagar.

By the way, do you know a good reason why we should hire a cab with driver from Chandigarh and not from Shimla?
We like to take the train from Chandigarh to Shimla.

    Much greetings
    Marian

Hello Marian - That is a great plan and I definitely envy you for having so much time to explore. Wish I could do the same.

I thought you were planning to hire a self-drive rental and that is why I suggested Chandigarh because you will have better choice there. But yes, if you are planning to hire a taxi with driver then definitely do it from Shimla.
