In Himachal Pradesh, the snow-clearing operation on 479-kilometer long strategically important Manali-Leh National Highway stretch at Darcha in Lahaul district started today. Snow clearance operation starts from Darcha to Baralacha, after a puja being performed for the safety of Border Roads Organization personnel, engaged in the task.

According to BRO, the snow-clearance work from Gulaba to Rohtang Pass will be launched tomorrow. Snow removal from Sissu to Rohtang would be commenced within next week. BRO and the General Reserve Engineering Force deployed with men and machines to clear the snow from the highway to restore traffic by April this year.

It may be recalled that the pass experiences heavy snowfall during winter as a result Lahaul valley remains cut off from the rest of the country by road for about six months.

Apart from being strategically important, this road is lifeline for people of Lahaul while an important link for tourism in Ladakh. The snow-clearance operation is launched by the BRO in March every year but this year, it is being done in advance from February
